Dementia
A dementia diagnosis can bring on a world of emotions for both a patient and their loved ones. How rapidly and how deeply symptoms onset will vary by the patient. Silver Pacific caregivers are well-trained and fully-prepared to provide compassionate daily living services to people living with dementia (including Alzheimers) in the safest and most dignified way possible.
It is often in the patient’s best interest to remain living in the home, for as long as possible, until assisted living is the only option. The familiarity of the environment will play a key role in care as disorientation, confusion, memory loss, frustration, and anger steadily set in. In addition to providing a full range care services, we can help clients engage in activities to keep the brain active and memories connected for as long as possible, including:
Looking at photo albums, listening to the stories the patient can recall, or gently reminding them who each of their loved ones is
Engaging in hobbies that promote mental sharpness, fine motor skills, and prompt happy memories
Playing instruments or singing, as these talents use a different part of the brain that might fade less quickly than short-term memory
As symptoms grow more prominent, safety, health and hygiene become the center of activities, as patients may not be truly aware of who they are, who loved ones or caregivers are, or where they are. During this time, we will ensure the client remains safe and clean; we will change soiled clothes and adult incontinence underwear and pads as needed, change bedpans, and apply salves and creams and other non-medical care topical treatments.
We will be at the side of our clients and their loved ones through the completion of hospice (if that’s the course of care), or through the safe transfer to a full-time care facility.
